NEW PLOT!!!!

So seeing as our potatoes are desperately seeking soil and I am desperately seeking my mental and physical well-being, the decision was made to stop waiting until we got some sort of compensation from the council and just go ahead and choose a plot.

So I called the site rep and organised to meet him. I took Mum as moral support (Baz was at work) and I was shown only two plots, even though when you walk around the site there are so many that are obviously not being worked and obviously belong to the site rep's cousin or the Mayor's step-niece or whatever, anyway, they were two we had already seen, so I went for the one that was a lot more quirky and surrounded by oracle-like tenants and had a water tap right opposite and was closer to the entrance. Do not ask me why but this was important to me!! Lazy or what?!

We have been told that we can have two half plots instead of the normal one, which I'm not sure whether we will be able to maintain, but we're going to try and if it's too much work then we can just give it up any time.

I am soooooooooooo excited to have an allotment again, I have been up there yesterday with Baz and today with Mum and her friend. I've already tidied the shed- yes there's a shed although is a shed still a shed if it has tarpaulin for a roof?- and sown some flower seeds into a pot. I've tried to enlist the help of everyone and anyone I know around Brighton to come and help me and Baz this Saturday as we need to get ready asap for them to come and rotivate.

still no plot

So we've been corresponding with the council and sadly we haven't been offered anything worth going for and the latest is this strange one:

Hopefully I have some good news for you. The rep has located a spare plot that adjoins plot 293/1 – if the hospitalised tenant is happy for us to move him onto this plot then you will be able to stay on plot, however this would require our moving the tenants glass house and shed across onto the new half plot as legally theses structures belong to them.

One of the site reps at weald should contact you shortly if this plan meets with approval with the tenant.

So, this is a bit funny cos we can't imagine how the guy whose plot it 'actually' is would feel being next to the guys who turfed him off his plot, not to mention how awkward it might be for us all to be neighbours... And I doubt he would go for this, not that we want to either. It is a bit cryptic as  the tenants glass house and shed- well firstly both the greenhouses (plural) are on Mikey's old one and secondly which shed as there is one on ours and one on Mikey's.  It makes me laugh that The rep has located a spare plot that adjoins plot 293/1, as if all these years this mystery plot stood in some invisible, parallel universe unspottable to the average human eye, and then along comes this person who miraculously 'locates' it. It reminds me of His Dark Materials....

the hospitalised tenant is happy for us to move him onto this plot makes me imagine this really sick guy on a hostpital bed being wheeled onto his lovely new plot, while we gloat and laugh at him across the fence with our lovely plot which he has been removed from.

as legally theses structures belong to them.- not so sure about the legality, we haven't got legal aid yet....

So badly want to be back on our allotment. The pots are chitting on the windowsill, we have sweet pea and heaps of veggie seeds to sow before long and most of all my health- both mental and physical- are taking a hit from not being up there digging and sowing away.......

garden centres and the waiting game

So I dropped in the letter to the council just now. Which means we just have to sit and wait for them to contact us, which means that it will probably be in about September time. Having worked for the council I know how much sitting around, pointless meetings and faffing goes on.

Not to be pessimistic or anything.

On the bright side me and Baz took a trip with Sadie (Mum's dog) up to the garden centre on race hill today. This is what we bought:

-two types of potato (one early and one main crop)
-sweet pea seeds
-onion and garlic sets

So we need to chit the potatoes, which I never even knew you had to do until the other day. It's frustrating that we have to do this without knowing whether we will definitely have somewhere to put them in 6 weeks. Baz seems to know lots about potatoes and which ones are good for what, so he chose them.

Can't wait to get stuck into our allotment once we get it.

Dear Matt...

We are writing to you with regard to the recent situation which has arisen concerning our plot at the Weald allotment site.

You phoned us on Friday 25^th February 2011 to explain that there had been a mistake and the plot which was given to us on the 30^th October 2010 actually still belonged to someone else. We would like to address the following:

 1) contradictory and incomplete information being given to us,

 2) what we are being asked to give up,

 3) what has been offered to us as compensation,

 4) what we would be willing to accept as compensation

 5) our general feelings and unhappiness about the situation

1) We have been given all sorts of different information regarding the whole situation, and it raises the question ‘what really is going on?’ As you can imagine, when faced with all different details and sides to the story, we have no idea what is going on and it just seems to create a wall of mistrust between us and you/the council.  We are very reasonable and trusting people, and do not have any grudge per se against the council. However, in light of the situation regarding our allotment, we feel like we have been messed around and have the impression that we are being ‘asked to leave quietly’. Whilst we appreciate that you have been friendly and diplomatic, and have apologised, it is frustrating for us to have been given so much conflicting information. 

The following points illustrate what we are talking about:

·      The previous/current tenant of our plot was apparently in hospital for a long period with a serious illness. If this is true then why has his co-worker, Jacqueline, not visited the plot in over 4 months?

·      With regard to the above point, you said that tenants often leave their plots over winter. Even if this is true, wouldn’t someone at least visit their plot at some point during the period of October through to March, which is half a year? 

·      The previous/current tenant apparently wrote the wrong number down on the form he filled out to say which plot he was willing to give up- if this is the case, then why isn’t one of the four half plots he apparently has/had empty? (We were told by our neighbour that he also used to have the two half plots next door but these are now occupied by her and her sister).

·      We were told by a site rep on 5^th March that the previous/current tenant had 5 letters sent to him concerning the plot(s). If this is the case, why is he even allowed back on the plots?

·      We were told that the previous/current tenant has had solicitors involved, but we were only told that on 5^th March.

2) We feel that what we are being asked to give up is not matched by what we are being offered as a recompense.

We were given the plot 293/2 on 30^th October 2010, which is when we signed the contract, and we paid one year’s rent for this plot in December 2010. We preceded to spend four months preparing the plot (to meet the requirement of 50% cultivation after three months), which involved a lot of physical, and mental, determination; we not only worked on our plot but also helped our neighbour on 293/1 who has mobility issues. 

The plot was not in the worst state possible, but it was nonetheless requiring a lot of attention: the shed was extremely messy and it took two days to tidy it and sort all the items inside it, the back area was full of conifers and other mess, which needed to be sorted and disposed of, the path had to be taken up and replaced as it did not run down the middle of the plots (this took many hours), we had to dig up a fruit tree and replant it as it was right in the middle of where the new path was, the fencing needed redoing, we had to dig lots of the land to make nine new beds, and so on.

We have spent many hours over the four months working hard to get our allotment ready for the spring, and we have also become quite attached to the land, in the way anyone would feel when they have invested a lot of time somewhere.

We were told that anything on the plot when we take it over is ours. There is a shed on plot 293/2 as well as lots of tools and bits inside. There are also lots of bricks, water containers, slabs, fencing etc. Since we are on a low income, this was great to have not only a shed, but tools too and it meant we could crack on and get things moving quickly. How can it be fair to tell us in October “All of these things are yours” to have it all taken away again 5 months later? We could have thrown away much of it since it is all old and rusty (and we are sure a lot of people would have done that), but we are resourceful people and had managed to put almost all of it to good use, including sharing it all with our neighbour who inherited an emptier shed.

3) What we have been offered by way of compensation is the following:

·      Another plot, any one that we like out of the available ones shown to us. There are currently two

·      Either a year or two years free rent; one year according to you and one or two years according to the site reps, depending on how much work is needed on the plot

·      Our new plot will be tidied up and possibly rotivated (though this was not confirmed the second time I (Steph) spoke to you).

Whilst we appreciate this offer we do not feel that it is just compensation.

4) What we would like is some gesture from Brighton and Hove Council which acknowledges what we have talked about above. For example, you could give us the money for a new shed, some tools and some wood to rebuild the beds we have spent 4 months constructing. Effectively giving us around £30 (the cost of rent) and tidying up the new plot does not compensate for our loss. Moreover, in the last three weeks we should have been doing things like chitting potatoes and buying seeds, working more on our plot etc, but instead we are having the stress of not knowing when we can put all that into action and are having to spend time and energy writing to you and deciding what we should do.

As an added note, we were surprised that you did not offer to come and meet us at the allotments yourself, along with the site reps. We would have felt better about the situation had you come in person to discuss everything.  Finally, it is amazing to us that although you did apologise on the phone about the situation in general, no-one has actually said “We are so sorry, it is our fault”. Why is it that are you blaming it on the site reps and the site reps are blaming it on you? It would be nice from our point of view if someone stood up and said “It is our fault”.

We hope to resolve the situation as quickly as possible, as I’m certain you do and we look forward to hearing from you. Barry is a member of the Green Party and has links with our local councilor, Alex Phillips. We are sure that she would be interested in our case, so we will contact her immediately if we do not feel you are taking this situation seriously.

letter writing time

So me and Baz went to the allotments today to meet with the site rep and see what plots were available if we agree to move off 'our' plot. We looked at four, two of which are '100%' free and two others which they aren't totally sure about and I guess they are being cautious because it would be really bad if, I don't know, they let a plot which wasn't actually free.....imagine the problems that would cause!

Whether it has anything to do with a conversation we had with some old friends we bumped into today at the site, well I don't know, but either way we've decided our plan of action and it is this: write a letter to the council guy (and the site reps, though just for their info) stating how unhappy we are with the situation, listing all the contradictory pieces of information we've had, including a new gem today which is that the guy whose plot it 'actually' is had five letters about his plot not being used, oh and that he has got solicitors involved, and threatening that we will take the matter up with our local councillor if the council won't do anything more than just offer us another plot and give us free rent for a year. What about the four months of hard graft we've put in throughout the cold, wintery, snowy months? We want a whole plot! We want the council to pay for wood for all the beds we want to build! We want a shed! And tools! And a lifetime supply of chocolate spread! Oh no hang on, that has nothing to do with allotments... We want an apology and acceptance of blame!

Why are we going to all this trouble? Well, why not? Life is boring sometimes and it's good to spice things up a bit. And I feel that we're not just doing this for me and Baz, we're doing it for all the allotment tenants who have to keep up with all these petty rules for site reps and councils who don't really care about giving back to them the respect and gratitude they receive.  Yes I know how that sounds and I don't care!

The council are annoying...

...and I'm allowed to say that because I used to work for them and they were!!

I was waiting for a call back from the guy I spoke to last week at the council and when I called today he sounded all surprised and confused as he thought we had left it that the site rep would just call me, even though I specifically remember him saying he would call me back last Friday....

I was a lot more angry and inquisitive on the phone today, but to cut a longish story short, which I am usually very rubbish at doing, I then spoke to the site rep who we are now meeting on Saturday so we can view other plots.  It was funny how both the council and site rep are both blaming each other, why can't whoever is at fault just say so, and say sorry? Though it doesn't really matter to me that much whose fault it is or isn't...  Also the council guy said today when I questioned him about the rent we've paid that we would get a year's rent free plus something else which I can't quite remember, I think either a refund for the 4 months we've paid or something.. And the site rep said he would give us two years rent free.

Oh and Mike never did keep us updated like Baz hoped he would... Turns out (I asked the council guy) that he's been shown some plots and accepted one.  So much for the North and South uniting...

Ok well I have a headache and have eaten too many chips so I need to retire to my bed now..... xx
